Cruise Ship Safety

Cruise ship safety, is it really necessary? There are many things that are taken for granted on a cruise ship, but cruise ship safety should not be one of them.

Cruise Ship Safety

Many of us love to go on cruises or dream of going on one if we have not already. According to the U.S. Maritime Administration there were about 9.4 million people who cruised in 2004 alone! But, few of us stop to think about cruise ship safety before we gotten on board. Although there are relatively few incidents relating to cruise ships and cruise ship safety, there are still accidents that happen every year that could have been avoided. Just a few years back, many of us remember hearing about all of the food poisoning incidents that occurred on a few different cruise ships - so there are a few areas that we should all be concerned about and that should motivate us to learn more about cruise ship safety before we book passage.

Your cruise ship safety checklist

One of the best resources that you can turn to to find out about the cruise ships that you are thinking about sailing with is the Center for Disease Control (CDC). They regularly do thorough checks of all cruise ships and then post each report card on their website. They check into many things including how clean the ship is overall, how good the water quality is, how well they prepare and store the food that they serve on board, and the general state of repair on the vessel. Simply log onto their website and you will find the report that they have issued for the ships that you may be sailing with. Do this before you buy the tickets!

When you are on board do not think that it is a completely safe environment. Some of the ships can contain up to 500 people and you cannot expect them all to be as virtuous as you are! Be aware of what is going on around you and practice some of the same common sense that you would use on land: don't walk in isolated places at night, etc.

Take advantage of the ship's safe and place all of your valuables there. Sure it is tempting to show off expensive jewelry and watches, but it will be much more devastating for you if they get stolen for good! Also do not leave anything of value in your room when you are not there, no reason to tempt the people that are cleaning your room.

Last, but certainly not least as far as cruise ship safety is concerned, try to take it easy on the booze. It impairs all of your faculties and can lead to much more trouble then it is worth! It may be free, but it can pose a serious threat to cruise ship safety.
