Unofficial Airline Safety Rankings

Although it isn't possible to determine which airline is the safest for sure, there are many criteria that can be used to see which airlines have a better track record. Just like any other product, people don't mind paying extra for quality, especially if it deals with their lives. In our airline safety rankings, we have compiled a list of the statistically safest airlines. These airline safety rankings are just used as a measure and does not mean that one airline is better than another. But statistically, these are the airlines with the least incidents or fatalities.

These airline safety rankings are compiled from data spanning four decades (from 1959 to 1999), and list the accident rates of each airline in the United States and Canada.

South West

America West

Delta Airlines

North West

Continental Airlines

United Airlines

USAir

Air Canada

Aloha Airlines

American Airlines

In this order, the airline safety rankings range from 0.0 percent accident rate to 0.53 accident rate in 40 years. It's not to say that these are the safest airlines in North America, but these are the airlines with the least incidents up to that point. Many factors may contribute to why these airlines have not had a major incident. Anything from frequency of flying, to region flown to has to be factored in.

When it comes to the airline safety rankings, it's not a competition. The goal is to make sure that all airlines someday have a perfect record for no incidents. As it is, there are few airplane incidents -- compared to car crashes and other accidents -- but when there are they are catastrophic. More safety measures are being taken to make sure that your experience flying is not just enjoyable, but safe as well. Safety is job number one.
