Pooling your Chemical Resources
The use of pool chemicals is a necessary ingredient for an overall safe pool experience. There are many things to consider when determining how these chemicals will impact your pool experience, and, although they are a necessary component for clean, sanitized water, they are potentially harmful when stored or used improperly.
When we think of pool safety, we often only think of the potential for drownings. There are, however, other safety issues we must address when we look to safety proof our pool areas. In your search for pool chemicals , make sure that you adhere to the following rules:
- Keep all chemicals out of the reach of children and pets.
- Chemical agents for test kits should be replaced each year.
- Keep the original lids on all chemical containers and make sure the lids are closed tightly when not in use.
- Do not stack different pool chemicals on top of one another.
- Store pool chemicals in a cool, dry, well ventilated area preferably off the floor.
- Do not store your pool chemicals where other flammable items may mix with them.
- Always add chemicals to water and never add water to chemicals.
- Never add chemicals while swimmers are using the pool.
- Test the water in your pool with a reliable test kit regularly. As a rule, the more people who use your pool, the more frequently you should test the water.
- Never reuse old chemical containers.
- Handle all chemicals carefully and never mix them as explosions or fire can occur.
- Do not smoke when using pool chemicals.
These are the first things to accomplish when establishing your pool safety routine. Pool chemicals are just as volatile as any other flammable ingredients, so, be familiar with their use and always be aware of the conditions of their storage.
