Welcome to safe homes! How to make our homes 'safe homes' involves taking a number of steps. A big factor in home safety is whether there are children in the house. The two rooms at the top of the 'safe homes' list are: kitchen and bathrooms.
Safety steps
You should start by going into all the rooms of your home and have a good look around the room. A lot of 'safe homes' safety advice is common sense. Here are some of our basic tips:
- Don't overload plug sockets
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- If you have children, ensure that sharp objects and medications are out of reach; children can climb so you should have a locked cabinet or drawer.
- Keep your environment sanitized
- Ensure that your fridge and freezer are set at the appropriate temperature
- Don't leave candles unattended, even for a minute
- Make sure that any chemical products in your home are being stored appropriately and are out of reach from children
- Have your water heater and heating/air conditioning serviced regularly
- If you use a generator make sure it is positioned outside of the home
